The multi-sensory experience in print has the unique ability to offer the combination of vision, touch, smell – and yes, even taste!
Special Effect inks such as Thermochromic and UV tap into trends that focus on interactivity between the consumer, and the brand.
In this case, as the bottle or can cools, the label will change in appearance as an indicator to let you know that your drink is chilled and ready. In this circumstance, the thermochromic process uses specially activated ink technology to convey messaging, whether to inform the consumer that their beverage has reached the desired temperature or some other messaging as part of the brand experience. Of course this technology also provides for the reverse process, wherein heat can display a signal on a package or label or in our case, a color changing Drink Coaster.
Mountain Dew – Mountain Dew used cold-activated thermochromic inks in their limited edition 16oz cans. The cans, which were used in a cross-promotional campaign with the Dark Knight Rises film where the Batman logo would change from a flat grey to Mountain Dew green when chilled to 8°C. The color changing aspect of the cans was part of the new, limited edition “Dew Gotham City” promotion.
Glitter inks, colored fluorescent and UV inks that glow under UV lights are another popular specialty that appeals to the visual senses. These developments are perfect for brands looking to attract young, style-conscious consumers and build a distinctive niche position in the marketplace. UV ink technology has already proved extremely popular in pubs and clubs for both the new breed of coolers and energy drinks.
Smell and touch are also getting a fair share of attention. Textured and tactile enhanced packaging and promotional print pieces are getting more popular, and we are all aware of the clever nasal teasers that are called scratch-and-sniff. Yes, Coaster Factory manufactures these too!
Coaster Factory may not manufacture edible beer coasters (yet), however we do specialize in top high-quality authentic pulpboard materials.
